Hawaiian Herbal Medicine

Good reference for people like me who live in Hawaii. Well written and the illustrations are very nice.

If you are looking to understand native Hawaiian medicine and the big kahuna (Hawaiian medicine man) this book is a great beginning. The herbal and medical practices make for fascinating reading and the illustrations themselves are worth the price of the book. The remedies are a bit unorthodox and a little foreign to our Western mindset, but interesting. For example, the remedy given for a fever: " Drink hau (hibiscus) slime, eat cooked luau and take a physic." I was hoping that the content was a little more concentrated on helpful remedies with native plants. While it does have some of these, much of the material centers on the spiritual and antiquated remedies. I am enjoying learning about Hawaiian plants and culture through this beautiful book.

Beautifully crafted, packed with incisive information (and much of it remembered from my growing up and hearing about "that" and "those things."
