Slade s fourth studio album was conceived and recorded amid various touring and promotional activities in late 1973, and also during the headline-making convalescence of Don Powell. The drummer was involved in an horrific car crash in July, briefly throwing the band's existence into doubt. To the delight of Slade s vast army of fans, Don lived to paradiddle another day. But even as they entered the studio to record the single My Friend Stan , a Number Two hit that preceded the release of the Old New Borrowed And Blue album, he was still walking with the aid of a stick, even having to be lifted onto his drum stool. Old New Borrowed And Blue is the sound of Slade at the height of their success striking out for new territory and blending their trademark foot-stomping rockers with a more mellow songwriting sensibility. The raucousness of Just A Little Bit My Town and We re Really Gonna Raise The Roof were offset by the understated feel of Miles Out To Sea . The honky-tonk piano-led Find Yourself Another Rainbow was another pivotal melodic moment, while How Can It Be? even saw the band venturing close to country-rock territory (an area that interested Noddy in particular) and the classic, crowd-swaying ballad Everyday demonstrated a songwriting maturity that few had suspected was there and became yet another top three hit. ONBB was released in late February 1974 and advance orders helped to maintain Slade s phenomenal chart performance. It ascended to the top spot in the UK, guaranteeing the foursome a latest set of gold disc awards, even before it was racked. Press feedback was deservedly positive, one notable UK review declaring: No one goes to sleep in this show. In several ways Old New Borrowed And Blue has the feel and effect of a Beatles album, say Rubber Soul . [But] whatever comparisons you [might] make, it couldn t be anyone else than Slade.

A mixed bag
This seems one of those albums that was made from all the bits and pieces that they could find laying around at the time. Some really good songs but the album doesnt flow like some of the other albums. Also the remastering didn't seem as good on this album and why did they put the 'melody maker' talking thing on it - thats as bad as putting Xmas songs on albums. Good but not a classic.

New direction, brave direction
Up until the release of this album, Slade could possibly be described as a one-dimensional rock band, mostly focused on producing foot stomping rockers. Like another reviewer here I was 14 years old when this album was released, and a big Slade fan at the time, but fortunately I did not experience any disappointment. This release saw new avenues explored, although this move was unpopular with many Slade fans, this was a brave change of direction for the band, even so, the "old" Slade is well represented here, with tracks such as "My Town" and "We're really gonna raise the roof". The track "When the lights are out" has a little bit of a Beatles feel to it, with Noddy Holder stepping aside from lead vocals to allow Jimmy Lea to take centre stage, his voice adds a new dimension to the bands sound. "How can it be" is a foot-tapping country music inflected song, the famous ballad "Everyday" was also another pleasant surprise, showing an emotional, tender side to the band. "Find yourself a rainbow" and "My friend stan" must have felt like a brave step to take at the time. This was an interesting change of direction from Slade, a change that continued to be explored on the album "Flame". 3 of the 5 bonus tracks include the unusual "Kill em at the hot club tonite" and the hit single "The Bangin man" and its flipside "She did it to me" - my favourite Slade track. This is an excellent album. A wise buy.

Nice Addition to the Collection
I always liked Slade first time round but never bought any of their records so this is a bit of a new discovery for me. Splatter vinyl is really nice. I bought Flame a while ago, in yellow and red splatter and that contains some interesting, even experimental, material. Good band.

A nice slice of nostalgia
The music is typical Slade. Steady and reliable. You know what you are going to get from them and this delivers. The splatter vinyl plays well with a good sound and no flaws (skips, crackle , warpping).Very happy with the purchase!

Glam Essential
This is Slade at their finest, it's got everything and no one does "music hall" like Slade. This is essential for glam collectors, it made me feel like a teenager again! Noddy Holder is just too fun!

Slade
