I have to read the next book now
The way Auren’s character is constructed shrouds her in mystery, we know she had a terrible childhood and was saved by Midas but not the details of how or why he gold touched her. Plus I was shocked at the plot twist when she used her power (that she even had power!) to transform the pirate captain so now I have to read on!! And she seemed to view her cage as protected rather than incarceration because of previous experiences. So many avenues to explore with her!Midas and Auren’s relationship intrigued me as she is in love/hero worship with him and he seems driven to protect her but will their romance develop and become more healthy? The only reason this is a 4 star rating for me is that I didn’t enjoy the part where they were travelling as much as when they were in the palace. I can see the necessity of the travels for the plot but personally I just don’t love the whole travelling/camping trope.

A little slow to start but easy to read
This book didnt grab me from the get go, I could take it or leave it. Characters were interesting and the format was an easy read.I wasn't overly bothered about the next book, you could easily read just the one in the series & be satisfied

great retelling
A unique and interesting book about king Midas and his good touched favoured Auren. More focused on Auren his golden caged pet and how she copes with life and politics in a Castle where she has very few alliesThe story started very ploddy and doesn’t really pick up any pace until at least 30% in and even then it doesn’t pick up much pace it more just goes to a light canter but we see developing friendships and relationships Shift and that was interestingAnd the last 40% of the book got really good with high tension and drama with the commander and the pirates and so much moreI can’t say much without spoilers but I’m glad I stuck with it and I feel the next book can only get better from here

4 Stars
Amazing first installment, the story really gripped me and I got invested quickly. However, I think we could have had better descriptions and world building towards the beginning, and some of the way things were described confused me a little.Loved the story though and I can't wait to see where it goes!

I can't believe I nearly made it halfway through.
Like other reviews have said, heed the warnings. I stopped at 44%.There are so many things wrong with this book but let me start with this. If you want a depiction of Stockholm Syndrome and gaslighting in the form of "a dark fantasy" then this is it. I'm sorry but when did dark fantasy become a stage for romanticised physical and emotional abuse? It was so difficult to read page after page of the MC clearly just surviving in an abusive "relationship", finding a "bright side" to her circumstances. Like "Oh I am in a cage but look! I HAVE CUSHIONS AT LEAST", rationalising the abusers behaviour in literally setting her up to be r***d and the author writing paragraph after paragraph of our MC praising the abuser in his critical thinking skills. What the actual F.You might ask me "Hey! Nobody forced you to read or keep reading this!" You would be correct. I was hoping against hope that it would get better, but it only continued to get worse, and then even worse. I can't bring myself to continue. It looks like it will take at least 3 books to even see a glimmer of hope. There is dark fantasy, but this dark feels like a bottomless pit, descending into the abyss and you keep hoping that the fall would end, that you reach the bottom and can start to claw your way up. The fall bever came for me. This is dark beyond fantasy. It's just dark and sad.I like steamy novels, I welcome the use of crude language, however when modern curses and phrasing is used in what feels like a medieval setting it is jarring, and feels very unfitting with the theme. I usually like Raven's FMC builds however this feels reused. Like a shadow of El from the cupid series, which I enjoyed a helluva lot more than this god knows what thing. This was very painful to read, I do not understand why it garnered as much positive attention as it did; and dear reader, I hope you don't consider this title and series after reading my review.

Loved it!
I couldn’t put this book down, there was always something going on and I needed to know what happened next, immediately! Great storyline, some awful characters, which always makes a good story and I have no idea where it’s going.Great start to the series.
