Excellent
A must for every artist – Brigid Marlin generously shares insights into the methods of the Northern Renaissance Masters, a fascinating journey which includes Hieronymus Bosch, the van Eyck brothers, through to Rembrandt. We are shown to well illustrated and clear ‘step by step’ practical ‘how to’ guidance, from modelling forms in egg tempera, to applying glazes and final oils, with demonstrations including painting a portrait, landscape and still life. Then we are treated to 20th century paintings by Ernst Fuchs and how Brigid trained and taught with him. Several of her masterful paintings are shown in development, revealing delicate brushwork, we can understand the progress of imaginative and somehow mystical glowing pieces, using the mische technique.‘Fellowship and friendship’ highlights the work of contemporary artists including notable visionary artists who have had the privilege to learn with Brigid.A very clear and comprehensive book which unveils the mysteries of this technique.

Great for learning to paint good art
Beautifully illustrated book with demonstrations throughout. I only wish it was a hardback. It’s a book for anyone who wants to make good art. My view is that Techniques In Painting is an inspiring book well worth a place on your book shelf.

Mostly pictures, and that's a good thing
I bought this because I was looking to improve my technique and learn how to make my retouching more painterly. I make hybrid photoshop/retouching/painting portraits using old masterworks and photographs of modern people. It has improved my work tremendously and I no longer feel like I need to rely on texture filters to make things look convincing. Just three images in her section on layering color washes were all it took for it to click! Feels like having a really good painting professor on your desktop.

mische technique
