Horses of the Dawn #1: The Escape (1)

Swept up completely!
As an educator and parent, I am a fan of this author's broad range of books. I knew I would enjoy whatever Lasky would add to my knowledge of the historical period, but I did not expect to be so completely caught up in the story-especially as I have never even ridden a horse. Estrella became as real to me as any human character and at the triumphal ending after such realistically portrayed hardships had been endured, I wanted to cheer out loud. Vivid, poignant. Writing for this age group at its best.

I acknowledge a bias for Lasky's work
Lasky is one of the authors for whose work I always search. She has an uncanny sense of and for animals -- their thoughts, etc. I find this sensitivity remarkable. I was totally caught up in the story and plot line of Horses of the Dawn and I look forward to Book 2. I will definitely be putting this on my list that I create for teachers and parents. It is beautifully written; action is fast paced; packed with historical details; and has a stated "philosophy that humans should follow. If you are looking for a great "theme" based book, I think you might have found it here. The Reading Professor

Amazing! *Spoiler Alerts!*
This book was absolutely amazing! Creatively written, great plot, and touching moments. Though there are some gruesome parts (Estrella's mothers death by great white, the fawn being killed and eaten by coyotes and mountain lions), it was great! Can't wait for the next book!!

Great new book from a stellar writer
This is a great book in the tradition of Guardians of Ga'Hoole. Fascinating story told from the horse's perspective. Historically accurate and full of good information, plenty of suspense, and interesting characters. I am eagerly awaiting the stories which will follow this one. Excellent read.

My granddaughter
My granddaughter has enjoyed all of the wolf books that Ms Lasky has written. When I saw the Horses of the Dawn book I knew she would love it. the only thing she likes better than wolves is horses. She is 10 years old. She raved about the book. She read it through 2 times and then "studied " the book. She can not wait for #2.

Beautifully written
Lasky's new series is off to a great start. Not as good as the Guardians of Ga'Hoole series, but it still gets five out of five. Estrella is such a good character, and each character is beautifully imagined. A terrific book, full of Lasky's beautiful imagination and in some places, tragedy. Fabulous, a real treat.

Pferderomane
Kathryn Lasky schafft es immer wieder neue Geschichten zu schreiben, die einerseits die Tiere zwar vermenschlicht, trotzdem auch viele Aspekte der Tiere nahebringt.
