Best around
Fantastic product, easy to set up and up and running very quickly. Yes transfer speeds are low if you are doing a large transfer(several gb) but that's the only minute negative I can find. Interface for the user is easy to navigate and the apps available for iPhone work well too. Can't recommend enough.

Hit and Miss !
This is a review of a Qnap TS-231+ network storage device, item shipped with no hard drives, I fitted two brand new WD red 1tb hard drives.Bought Item from Amazon for well under the market price, so far so good! When it worked it worked very well.A couple of points,If you want the hard drives to spool down ie, have the device go to sleep that is a pain setting up as some apps keep the device active so its a bit of enable this and disable that to get that feature working.Device is quick but not as quick as stated when connected to a gigabit switch and transferring data back and forth again though a lot quicker than other NAS boxes I have had from Iomega and Buffalo.Access to the device is from a web browser not from some outdated clunky interface and it is very easy to navigate, update and use.Device is near silent with the fan running so it could be left in living room or on a deskAnd now for the reason this device was returned simply it failed and refused to turn on, this was just after a month of ownership up to that point it worked as it should with little or no limitations BUT read the specs on Qnaps website and look at the apps you can add to this before you purchase it as it has a ARM based cpu and not an INTEL cpu that allows you a lot more scope to use the NAS to its full advantage. As a foot note if asked would I buy this item again? The answer is no, maybe I had a fault unit? who knows, Would I buy from Qnap again I already just a different more expensive model.

Compact, a bit more complex than expected, but it works!
We recently bought this QNAP TS-231 + 2 Bay NAS Enclosure with 2 Western Digital Red 6TB drives. Although we did some research we are new to NAS and these are our early experiences -- The enclosure looks really well made and is more compact than we expected.- Fitting the discs into the NAS racks is easy - there are 4 small screws to fix the discs to the caddy which you then slide into the NAS and that's it.- The two wired connections are via a Gigabit Ethernet Cable to your router and the mains plug - although there's no recommendation to do so we fitted an anti-surge device to the mains supply.- Configuring the NAS was manageable for us as novices but it's not as intuitive as we'd expected. There was a password glitch with our Qnap account which we don't think was our fault - we reset the unit and then it worked fine. The other bit we found difficult was navigating to the folders we wanted to back up but we overcame that and all seems well now.- Backup times are surprisingly long - we started backing up our RAW photo files last night and the NAS is still chomping through them this morning which I understand isn't unusual first time around.- The unit is quite silent although the LEDs at the front are quite busy during backup which might be a consideration if you want to install the device in a bedroom.- The NAS is still a physical system and if you want resilience to fire etc. you'll need to consider a NAS at another site too.- Although I have no reason to think the NAS won't become more familiar as we use it - it's a step up in complexity from configuring a stand alone personal cloud or back up drive. If there's anything else we learn (and I imagine there'll be plenty!) I'll update this review.
