Based very loosely on Edgar Allan Poe's short story, 'The System of Dr Tarr and Professor Fether', Stonehearst Asylum proved to this skeptical viewer its worth as a darkly humorous gem of cinema, replete with twists and turns that will certainly send shivers down the spine of the most seasoned of horror aficionados. Blood and gore need not apply here, however. The atmosphere which set the stage for the psychological mind-twists that occured throughout, along with a supremely proficient cast of actors who were nothing less than mesmerizing in their believability, are the ingredients that qualify this as the consummate gothic horror film - and whilst it deviated considerably from 'Tarr and Fether', was a fitting tribute to the author and his work.Aside from providing a taste of the finest acting I have viewed in quite some time, the characters, even seemingly minor players, were every single one of them lively and bold. Extremely well scripted it may have been, but this was nothing if not a character driven story. In a nutshell, we are introduced to the mysterious Dr Newgate, who, shortly before Christmas 1899, makes an appearance at Stonehearst Asylum, whereupon it immediately becomes apparent something is amiss with the idiosyncratic doctors and patients alike, and that there is more to this unorthodox alienist who has turned up on their doorstep in search of hands on experience.Newgate, we learn early on, seems overeager to pry and rather too interested in the stunning Eliza Graves, a seemingly normal patient with a flair for the piano. His curiosity takes him deeper into an abyss of literal and metaphorical nightmares (for if one follows very, very closely the threads of this movie, and knows precisely what to look for, woven into its fabric is a thought provoking commentary on post-modernistic ideologies), and as each new horror unfolds, yet another mystery is presented. Meanwhile, Newgate, with his nonconformist methods, is stirring the status quo at Stonehearst, and the two main plotlines come to a head with the asylum's New Years celebration, an elaborately rendered example of suspense that was the crowning jewel of the entire movie. That tension lasts quite literally until the very last minutes, when, just as it seems we have everything figured out, we learn absolutely nothing is at it first appeared.If I have not made mention of this, the actors exuded authenticity, while the lush period costumes were to die for. Jim Sturgess (Dr Newgate) in particular was just incredible; he can give you goosebumps with a whisper. And that he did, on too many occasions to count. With a premise so utterly original on all accounts, I cannot lavish enough praise on this movie, which I believe Poe himself would have been proud of.

You just don't know who you can trust! This was a great, sometimes disturbing story. The poor young doctor walks into sub-standard treatment of the mentally challenged with hopes of helping to bring healing to at least a few. Such a caring doctor, one would wonder "why here?" As the story develops, things become a little more revealing and you really start to wonder who's crazy and who isn't. The end tells it all.

When we first see Stonehearst Asylum it is shrouded in fog, and there is a raven croaking at the gate. A freaking RAVEN. That was the first sign to me, that this movie was not going to be your run-of-the-mill period chiller. And you know what? It delivers on every level. Start with a masterful cast playing vibrant, lurid characters, throw in a fast-paced, surprisingly fun script with enough twists to astound even the most astute viewer, and saturate it with some excellent atmosphere and mood, all shadows, secrets, and flickering candle lights!Let's talk about the cast first, because what a cast it is. Jim Sturgess leads as Dr. Edward Newgate, who with his wimpy mustache and thick spectacles, seems the most unlikely-looking romantic lead in Hollywood. But its also a brilliant and stunning performance filled with surprising gravitas. Kate Beckinsale shocks everyone with a vulnerable and subtly beautiful performance as a 'chronic hysteric'. But it is Sir Ben Kingsley as Dr. Silas Lamb that electrifies the entire screen and steals all of the scenes. All of them. I haven't seen a good actor have this much fun since Coppola's Dracula. Sir Ben is an acting BEAST in this movie. David Thewlis, Michael Caine, and Brendan Gleeson - all some of the greatest actors all to step in front of a camera, have memorable side roles, all hiding dark secrets and captivating the audience.The performances are so electrifying, so subtle, so powerful and of so high a calibre, they elevate what could have easily been overblown Gothic camp or a boring chiller, into a thrilling spectacle unlike anything we've seen in a while. There are no black-or-white heroes or villains; the doctors are sometimes cruel, the lunatics are angry but pathetic. This allows for some unexpected real drama and truly interesting characters.Then there's the plot, which is apparently an elegant and terrifying confection of madness, secrets, and twists and turns on every front. The setting could not be more ripe for horror. I mean, a Victorian lunatic asylum perpetually shrouded in fog and thunder? With RAVENS croaking at the spiked iron gates? But thankfully, STONEHEARST ASYLUM eschews the jump scare for the subtle build-up of dread, and blood and gore for mind games, dark secrets, hidden passages, and classy tension. Until that is, the Asylum and everyone in it goes mad. There's something timelessly macabre about two hundred lunatics madly dancing round a bonfire, or dancing to classical music, some swaying, some twitching, some manic, some merely pathetic.STONEHEARST ASYLUM ain't perfect. There's some irking plot holes, and everyone's motivation is a bit muddled. There's one character who can apparently survive having a half ton of coal dropped on his head... But this is a really top-notch psychological thriller, which doubles as a moving discourse on madness and sanity, and the cruel practices of Victorian medicine. Not for those who like their films light and snappy, cool and easy. But if you like horror, suspense, Gothic, Edgar Allen Poe, or just a good old-fashioned, scary psychological thriller, I can't recommend this movie ENOUGH.Five utterly mad, completely bonkers, absolutely insane stars.P.S. To summarize - Dr. Newgate, who has recently graduated from Oxford, shows up at Stonehearst very eager to pursue a career as an asylum doctor. The administrator, Dr. Lamb decides to take the young man under his wing. Although he is initially intrigued by Lamb's unconventional treatment methods, Newgate almost immediately notices that something is amiss at this institution. It might have had something to do with psychotic patients being allowed to run around freely all over the place. Who knows? Any inkling he had about getting the hell out of there went out the window upon meeting Eliza, a patient that he becomes completely enamored with. To complicate matters more, Newgate stumbles upon some patients in the basement who claim to be the real employees of the asylum. So the mystery ensues...This movie has a lot going for it. For one, it has a fascinating storyline that is loosely based on Poe's short story, The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether. It also has an amazing cast, including Ben Kingsley, Kate Beckinsale, and Michael Cane. I especially enjoyed Kingsley's performance as the enigmatic Dr. Lamb, which was nothing short of awesome. The 1900s style asylum setting and the costumes were also pretty cool. I had some mixed feelings about the ending. However, I appreciate how entertaining all the different twists and turns were. All in all, thumbs up!

Ihm gegenüber sitzt mit Pfeife im Mund der kahlköpfige Anstaltsleiter Dr. Lamb, nachdenklich den frischgebackenen Neuankömmling in der Ärzteschaft musternd . " Warum wollen sie sich gerade hier bewerben? " hatte der ehrwürdige Doktor mit ruhiger Stimme gefragt , und umgeben vom Ticken der grossen Uhr, den alten Porträts an den Wänden , dem flackerndem Feuer im Kamin und den schweren Teppichen, fühlte sich der junge Edward etwas überrumpelt. Bewerben hier in dieser Klinik in der Einöde, wo die Krähen und Raben um die weißverschneiten Türme und Erker krächzen in der Stille vollkommener Abgeschiedenheit.Es ist kurz vor Weihnachten des Jahres 1899. Abgelegen von der Welt in tief verschneiten Wäldern liegt Dr. Lambs Wirkungsstätte, die altehrwürdige Heilanstalt Stonehearst, ein riesiger prachtvoller viktorianischer Bau mit endlosen Fluren, reichverzierten Wänden aus Mahagoniholz und exquisit ausgestatteten Sälen und Zimmern. Das Sanatorium für die irrsinnig Gewordenen aus sehr gutem oder sogar adeligem Hause, der exquiste Verwahrungsort für den menschlichen Abschaum für den sich die reichen Familien schämen, und der hier isoliert von den " normalen " Menschen in dieser Spezialklinik, gelegen zwischen nebligen Bergen und tiefen Schluchten, sein Dasein fristet. Doch Fristen trifft es nicht richtig. Als Edward ( Jim Sturgess) ,der sich hier als junger Assistentsarzt in diesem vollkommen von der Aussenwelt isolierten Kosmos bewirbt , den charismatischen Leiter Dr. Lamb ( Ben Kingsley) zur ersten Visite zu den einzelnen Patienten begleiten darf, kommt er aus dem Staunen nicht mehr heraus. Die realitätsentrückten Patienten sind allesamt freudvoll und friedlich , dürfen sich nach ihren eigenen Vorstellungen frei in den Klinikräumen bewegen , tanzen, musizieren und ihren Visionen und Luftschlössern nachhängen. Ein womöglich groteskes Bild einer Gesellschaft, in der das Individuum in seiner eigenen Wirklichkeit lebend, glücklich sein darf und aktzeptiert wird. Ein Jeder finde Frieden in seiner Realität. " Hier haben wir zum Beispiel Graf Balzoni, " erläutert der Anstaltsleiter dem verdutzten Neuankömmling und zeigt dabei auf einen weisshaarigen Patienten , der immer wieder den Kopf hebt, schnaubt und wiehert. "Seit dem er beim Polospiel von seinem Pferd abgeworfen wurde, hält er sich selbst für einen Araberhengst . Jetzt ist gerade seine Fütterungszeit. ", und voller Inbrunst verspeist der galloppierende Insasse einige ihm dargebotene Äpfel.....Der Film wirkt hier von Anfang an herrlich verschroben , fast satirisch, doch welche klugen und feinsinnigen Wahrheiten verbergen sich bereits hier in den fast surrealen Bildern." Wie können sie die Patienten noch in ihrem Wahn bestärken. Wollen Sie sie denn nicht heilen und sie wieder zur Besinnung bringen ?" fragt Edward ganz entgeistert. " Zu welchen Zweck", antwortet leise Doktor Lamb, " um aus einem glücklichen Pferd einen unglücklichen Menschen zu machen?"Selten habe ich so kluge , treffende und nachdenkenswerte Dialoge in einem aktuellen Film gehört, und ebenfalls selten erleben wir einen cineastischen Genuß, in dem nichts ist wie es scheint und in dem zentrale Lebensfragen um Wahrheit, Individualität, Ethik und Humanität so versponnen und betörend eingearbeitet wurden. Ausnahmeregisseur Brad Anderson schuf ein packendes, intelligentes , berauschend ausgestattetes Psychodrama, das wie kaum ein anderes Werk der letzten Zeit eins erzeugen kann : Kinomagie mit Einfühlsamkeit, mit Verve, Dramatik, philosophischen Denkanstössen, sinisterer Doppelbödigkeit , mit geradezu barocker Schönheit in Kostümen und Interieur , einem brillant durchkomponiertem Drehbuch , genialen Überraschungen und denkwürdigen Schauspielleistungen allen voran Ben Kingsley, Michael Caine , Jim Sturgess und Kate Beckingsale .Nicht umsonst gehört Brad Anderson zu den aufregendsten Regisseuren des an Aufregungen so armen Hollywoods. Kein Film des Bilderkünstlers hat mich bisher enttäuscht und auch in " Stonehearst Asylum" spielt er zwei Stunden unglaublich filigran auf der Klaviatur der Emotionen, dreht und wendet unser Denken, lässt staunen, zuweilen erschauern , gepackt und berührt sein , um uns am Ende mit einer unter die Haut gehenden Pointe noch einmal zu überwältigen.Was steckt hinter den unkonventionellen, humanen Behandlungsmethoden des Dr. Lamb ? In einer Zeit kurz vor dem Heraufdämmern des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts in dem der Umgang mit psychisch Kranken in Heilanstalten eher an mittelalterliche Foltermethoden erinnerte. Drastisch zeigt uns " Stonehearst Asylum" auch zu Anfang derlei demütigende und qualvolle " Behandlungsmethoden" an Aussenseitern, traumatisierten Personen, Dementen oder auch Homosexuellen , die an Perfidie und Menschenverachtung kaum überbietbar sind. Zwangsernährung, Waterboarding, Dunkelhaft, tagelange Fixierungen.Doch hier in Stonehearst scheint alles anders. Wie in einer eigenen besseren und zugewandteren Welt sind hier Patienten und Ärzte völlig gleichberechtigt. Die Idee den Realitätsentrückten in seiner Wirklichkeit Glück und Anerkennung empfinden zu lassen, ohne Schocktherapien, Zwangsjacken und Stromstösse ist direkt revolutionär. Die gelebte Utopie von Gleichberechtigung und vorurteilsfreiem Zusammmenleben ?!Auf dem weiteren Fortgang der Visite wird Edward auch die bildschöne Patientin Eliza Graves ( Kate Beckinsale) kennenlernen, von ihrem gewalttätigen Ehemann eingewiesen, weil angeblich an Hysterie leidend. Fasziniert ist der junge Neuankömmling von dieser Frau, der so gar nichts von jedweder Geisteskrankheit anhaftet. Die Anziehungskraft beruht auf Gegenseitigkeit, doch wie erschrocken ist Edward als Eliza ihn am Weihnachtsabend unvermittelt in eine abgelegene Nische zerrt und mit flehenden Worten bedrängt." Um Gottes Willen, verlassen sie diesen Ort so schnell wie möglich !" Und dann geflüsterte Enthüllungen , die mit einem Schlag das scheinbar idyllische Treiben hier in der Klinik vor dem inneren Auge in schieres Entsetzen verwandeln. Nichts ist wie es scheint. Vor Wochen gab es hier eine Revolte der Insassen bei der die Geisteskranken komplett die Führung übernahmen und nun die Ärzte spielen. Der wahre Dr. Lamb ( Michael Caine) seine Mitarbeiter und das Anstaltspersonal wurden entweder ermordet oder befinden sich eingesperrt in dunklen Kellern unter der Klinik, dem Hungertod ausgesetzt.....Diese Pointe darf ruhig verraten werden, entwickelt sich aus diesem nervenzerrenden Dilemma doch erst das Füllhorn an grandiosen Einfällen, knisternder Anspannung, unterschwelliger Bedrohung und komplexen Twists, die " Stonehearst Asylum" so aussergewöhnlich machen. Für Flucht ist es zudem für den armen Edward längst zu spät.Literaturinteressierte werden es längst ahnen, der Film entwickelt Motive der skurrilen Novelle " Dr. Teer und Professor Feder" von Edgar Allan Poe weiter und macht daraus ein traumhaft anzusehendes , vielschichtiges Kinoerleben, das hinreissend zwischen klassischem Gruselfilmambiente, morbider Atmosphäre , tiefer Melancholie, herrlich komplexen Irritationen und spannenden Denkanstössen pendelt.Was ist gut, was ist böse, was richtig oder falsch, normal oder abnormal ? Recht und Gesetz, der Anspruch auf Wahrheit wird von denen kreiert, die die jeweilige Macht inne haben. Die im Keller eingeschlossene Ärzteschaft hat in der Gesellschaft von 1899 Recht, Moral und Deutungshoheit über Menschen auf ihrer Seite. Mit ihren " rechtschaffenen" gesellschaftlich aktzeptierten Methoden angebliche Geisteskranke als solche zu stigmatisieren, Diagnosen zu stellen und unter diesem Deckmantel entsetzliche Greueltaten zu begehen, stehen sie auf der legalen, geachteten Seite, sind hofierte Gelehrte, Wissenschaftler und Mediziner. Dem gegenüber stehen hier die Patienten, die, so labil und gefährlich der falsche Dr. Lamb ( Ben Kingsley) sein mag, womöglich mit diesem die wesentlich funktionsfähigere, modernere und menschenwürdigere Gesellschaftsform in diesem Mikrokosmos in kurzer Zeit aufbauen konnten. Würde der wahre Dr. Lamb ( Michael Caine) zurückkehren, würde das alte sadistische System wieder eingeführt werden, mit schrecklichen Strafen für die Aufrührer. Trotzdem ist der Ist- Zustand der Anarchie nicht auf Dauer realisierbar, denn abgeschieden von der Aussenwelt werden die Essensvorräte der Klinik bald aufgebraucht sein und in der gelebten Utopie einer neuen , freien Gesellschaft ist ebenfalls die Willkür , die Gier und der Egoismus nicht fern. Wie fesselnd lotet " Stonehearst Asylum" diese Kernthematik aus und das mit formidablen Schauspielleistungen und einer Vielschichtigkeit in den Charakteren, die hier nur angerissen werden kann. Besonders Ben Kingsleys Figur ist voller faszinierender Widersprüche und mit seiner Vita ,die am Ende zeigt, dass dieser Kopf des Aufstandes noch auf viel subtilere Weise Opfer und Täter ist, kann dieses filmische Juwel sogar noch kritische Zeitbezüge zu Heute aufbauen.Brad Anderson kann bis zur letzten Sekunde uns atemlos machen mit diesem wundervoll raffinierten klassischen Kinoepos , in Begeisterung versetzen, einschließlich der letzten Wendung, die man nicht kommen sieht, aber die man im entscheidenden Moment hätte bemerken können, hätte man nur darauf geachtet. Ein Mystery Drama voller Suspense, nuanciert, begnadet inszeniert, auch voll Traurigkeit, stiller Poesie, Bitternis und ein Ruf nach Menschlichkeit. Für mich das leider noch viel zu unbekannte Kinowunder, der letzten Zeit.

Truly a film not to be missed, one that will enthral you to the end with mystery from within a... ASYLUMwhere madness turns to love and understanding when things go wrong from with in.... such a placeSorry but no real " bloody separation of heads from body's here or any other type ofgory murderous bloodthirsty sanguinary..But a film that will grip you from start to finish " Who is mad and who is sane "Films on the same lines if you like as " Sherlock Homes " or the old " Jack the Ripper " type with nosilly acting... but acting at it's best from some very good actors like Michael Caine...who stars in this very good film witch must say it all need I say more....I give this film the thumbs up and Five Gold Stars from me.I only hope you get to watch it and enjoy it some cold wet eveningas I have done.. twice in one day... and worth every pennyfrom SATAN

A very good little film this and shows what can be achieved even on a reasonably low budget. About a young doctor who visits the asylum in order to study medicines being used on the patients and he sees also the brutal,and cruel methods used to suppress them. The inmates have literally taken over the asylum and as the story advances we learn the young doctor (jim sturgess) has an ulterior motive for going there. Sturgess is joined by Kate Beckinsale - with or without clothes on - Ben Kingsley, David Thewlis, Michael Caine - is he EVER going to retire? and a host of other well-known character actors. Good Film and worth your time.

I was looking for new films to watch and stumbled upon this one and as you do, watch the trailer and then go on to watch the film if you like it. (Sceptical like most for seeing a new film, but was willing to give it a try).I found this film to be exciting and sit on the edge of your seat at times.Very good story line and there is a very good plot twist in it when they are near the end.Highly recommend it for someone who is looking for a new film to watch.

Stonehurst Asylum an imaginative and beautifully designed film, with a strong cast and high production values, receives an excellent Blu Ray transfer that displays exemplary audio and video. Based on a rather obscure E.A. Poe tale, that undoubtedly also inspired the framing structure for the Amicus compilation "Asylum", this movie has few true surprises but although not of classic status its stars ensure an entertaining thrill ride. But don't expect too much. It's not surprising that the title changed, as Kate Beckensdale isn't really the driving force behind the movie, which is what that original title would have implied, but rather Jim Sturges.

A young intern in the 1800.s comes to an asylum claiming to want to learn how to handle mental cases. The head doc does,nt believe in brutal methods lets patients runaround etc As the intern got alterior motives. Is the head doc really who he seems . Good story ,good twist at end .

Wasn't sure what to expect given the cast but this was a real winner. Great atmosphere and strong script and acting kept me guessing all the way through. Definitely worth a watch.

Watchable but with a good premise that could have delivered so much more. Caine is good but woefully under-used. The best aspect is the production design.

Good British film with top actors about dodgy goings on at a 19th century asylum for the ' insane'

Rather slow and drawn out, but a very clever story with an excellent cast. The twist at the end is very unexpected and well worth the wait. Beckinsale as always is stunning and almost worth watching the film just for her!

DVD was excellent quality, new - it played fine. Film plot itself - very different to what I expected. I thought it was a horror but it made me laugh more than anything, it more like a comedy at times. V. different than what I was expecting and I couldnt take it fully seriously, but still entertaining enough.
